BENUE SOUTH LEGISLATORS: OJU/OBI IN FOCUS

On my focus in Apa/Agatu, in respect of the above subject matter in line with legislative effectiveness, in the areas of oversight and qualitative representation of the people’s interest, the general conclusion is that the present serving legislators in both state and federal constituencies are not electable, as a result of their abysmal performances.
Focus on Oju/Obi, the legislative activities of Hon. Samson Okwu, Rt. Hon. Nick Eworo, Rt. Hon. Onah Adoga Joseph and Hon. Ire Matthew Owuru will be x-rayed to evaluate their performances and also gauge the electability or non-electability status of the Igede lawmakers.  more after the cut ........................

As earlier argued in the analysis of Apa/Agatu constituency, legislators are the representatives of the people, elected by the people from the grassroots in the Nigerian federation, for the purposes of enacting laws for peaceful coexistence, good governance and accountability, bearing in mind the welfare of the people as their primary function through arrangements of executing constituency projects, though on de facto grounds.
Thus, the humdrum disposition of Rt. Hon Okwu (a second timer in the Federal House of Representatives with his eyes on the third term) in his duty representing Oju/Obi has been so broody.

According to many of his constituents who were spoken to, he (Okwu) has failed not only in presentation of bills affecting his people positively, but also in oversight activities. A case in point, is the Rural Access Mobility Projects (RAMP), executed by the Federal ministry of Agriculture in Benue South Senatorial District, the Constituency Projects of Distinguished Senator David Mark for the year 2012, which contain the following in Oju/Obi Federal Constituency:

* Oju -Ebenta -Uwokwu(23.5km)at the cost of N135 million
*Adum East -Ohuma-Oju(11km) at the cost of N100million
*Okpudu -Orihi -Ikomija (9 km) at the cost of N100 million.

These projects suffered perpetual neglect due to the inept utility of the oversight mechanism of Okwu, which denied the people of the constituency the supposed democratic dividends.
Apart from the aforementioned, the 2016 budget contained Okwu's constituency projects as followed:
*S/N 257; 18-seater bus at Oju/Obi Federal Constituency
*S/N 489; Construction of 20 km earth/surface dress from Ohuma-Ojwo -Ikpoyire -Amumo West -Ogoro in Obi. This is just a mirage because, it has been alleged that, they collected N100million each in place of the projects. The import of all these is that Okwu has done nothing representing Obi/Oju.

While in the state, Rt. Hon. Eworo, a Member representing Obi state constituency, is executing a rural electrification project in the five communities worth N97million.
He (Nick) also influenced Primary Health Care center to Ikoku Ipinu, instituted Scholarship Scheme for indigent students in Obi and single handedly made translation of NTA News in Igede dialect in the State possible.

While his counterparts, Rt. Hon Onah Adoga, Oju 1 State constituency is infamous with unfulfilled promises to his people at every given opportunities.
And as for Hon. Ire Matthew Owuru of Oju 11 State constituency, he has done nothing but with usual alibi of litigation, through to Supreme Court, and as such, has not settled for real legislative functions for the people.

If the legislators are expected to make judicious use of the instrumentality of oversight to foster public accountability, strengthening of effective representation, provision of social Security and Protection of their people, then the foregoing is open for the people of Oju/Obi Constituency to ascertain amongst their legislators, the electables and non-electables.
