GOV ORTOM URGES FG TO DECLARE HERDSMEN IN BENUE AS TERRORISTS

Governor Samuel Ortom calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare armed Fulani herdsmen killing innocent people in communities of Benue State as terrorists. 

 

The Governor’s call follows repeated herdsmen attacks on different communities of the state in the last couple of months. The latest of such attacks took place last night at Tse-Chembe community near Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area where the herders murdered seven persons in cold blood and left many others badly injured.

But for the alarm raised by media practitioners of Igede extraction, the communal war between Ukpute and Bonta in Oju and Konshisha Local Government Areas, respectively, would have continued unabated.

This was the assertion of a pressure group under the aegis of Association of Igede Media Professionals (AIMPs).

The media practitioners said their press statement of Tuesday, June 30 which went viral was what forced Governor Samuel Ortom to hurriedly convene a peace meeting the next day where a truce was reached by the warring communities.

In the Tuesday statement, the group alleged that the governor and the security agencies in the state had failed to make concerted effort to quell the communal clash that had been raging for days. click to continue reading after the cut

Information reaching us indicated that the peace accord brokered by the Benue state government between the warring Bonta and Ukpute communities of Konshisha and Oju LGAs has been broken.

The threat to the ceasefire began when some of the displaced members of Ukpute community in Oju returned to their homes in a move to rebuild their destroyed houses were allegedly chased away through gunfire from the "enemy camp".

Also on Thursday a man simply named as John was ambushed and his motorcycle seized along Ukpute farm route by suspected men from Bonta.

John is an indigene of Obachita, Oju LGA.

The threat to the peace accord finally came to a head on Friday(today)with men from Bonta community of Konshisha allegedly attacking a farmer and his family members from Oju LGA, killing him in his farm in Ukpute.

The body of the man identified as Oga Icha, had since 5pm this evening been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Oju after taken to the police for report and necessary action.
