Re: Recession: ‘FG, States Must Engage In Food Production’ Prof Ode Ojowu

A former Chief Economic Adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Ode Ojowu, yesterday urged the Federal Government to work with states and local governments in the area of food production as part of measures to overcome the recession facing the country.

He gave the advice in Abuja at a one-day Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Media cluster meeting on ‘Buharimeter’ organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA). Ojowu said it is known that food accounts for over 54 per cent of Nigerian households’ expenditure and that the extensive inequality among Nigerians makes using average assessment untenable.

“If we want to talk about recession in this context, we should rather be calling it hunger and famine and I think there is lack of internal capacity to deal with this challenge. When we had the oil boom we spend and spend without investing and also we refused to save.”
