The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Benue State University branch this afternoon proceeded on an indefinite strike. The strike which started hours ago will go down in history as one of the many union struggles by ASUU in demands for their allowances and other unpaid benefits.
The meeting which took place at the Theatre Arts complex of the second campus Benue State University was moderated by the branch Chairman of BSU, ASUU Prof. U. D Ikoni who read the resolution of the National Executive Council of ASUU upon visitation to the branch.
Earlier this week the NEC, ASUU had sent a three man delegate to Benue State University ASUU upon receiving a request from the branch Chairman on behalf of the branch requesting the permission from the National body to proceed on strike. The BSU, ASUU in a congress that lasted for hours interacted with the team which had investigated and delebrated on several issues affecting members of the union ranging from unpaid Earned academic allownace EAA, absence of an Insurance Policy for members, Pension Scheme, Appointment of Principal Officers in the University by the government and delayed payment of staff salaries, payment of death benefits to its members.
The Vice Chancellor of the University who also attended the meeting, persuaded members to be patient as all is been put together to see to it that issues raised by Members will be addressed soonest, however members of the congress objected to this plea saying they prefer to stay at home till the issues regarding their welfare and favourable working conditions are addressed,
